An art festival in the Songzhuang artists village on the outskirts of Beijing.
After initial hostility when artists first moved here in the 1990s, the town began to see art as a development opportunity. Co-operatives of local farmers built studios and a museum, and government encouraged institutions to relocate. In 2009, the Songzhuang Original Art and Cartoon Industry Cluster was launched, an ‘international culture creation industrial park and creation culture and tourism district’. CNN estimated that 4,000 artists were living and working there.
