Question:
I type in my password and I do not get Access. What should I do?

Answer:
Passwords are case sensitive make sure you are using lower or upper case letters, as they were assigned to you. Example: username = smith. If you type Smith it will not work.

When you are considering sending credit card or other financial information over the Internet, the first thing to look for is whether or not the server is secure. A server is the computer that receives your information and sends other information back to you. If a server is not secure, there is no guarantee that your credit card number, or other information, is safe from unauthorized use.

A secure server is used to make sure that no one can intercept, or “listen in,” on data transmissions from your computer to the server and back. When you enter a secure portion of a Web site, your browser (the software you use to view Internet pages) becomes set to encrypt, or “scramble,” any information you will be transmitting to the server. When you send your information through the Internet, it is sent in a “scrambled” form. Only the server receiving the data holds the code to unscramble your information. This means that even if someone tries to intercept your data, all he will get is a jumble of meaningless letters and numbers. This method is called a “Secure Sockets Layer” (SSL). In order to be certain that your information is secure, your browser must support SSL. Two browsers that support SSL are Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer (for more information on these browsers, see below). If you are using a different browser (e.g., America Online), please call your internet service provider to make sure it supports SSL. Using this method makes it very unlikely that your information can be used by unauthorized persons. (Please note that no current version of “NCSA Mosaic,” a type of browser, supports SSL.)

You can usually tell you are connected to a secure server by the appearance of your browser. These changes vary from browser to browser, and sometimes vary from PC to Mac. Two of the most common browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is easy to see if servers are secure using these browsers. Look for these visual cues:

Netscape Navigator

Navigator version 2.0 or 3.0: A very thin blue bar will appear towards the top of the browser window. Also, the “broken key,” which usually appears in the lower left corner, will turn dark blue, as in the example above.

Navigator version 4.0 (Communicator): The “open lock” in the lower left corner will become closed. See the above example.

System Requirements

Allan M. Armitage’s Interactive Guide of Herbaceous Perennial Plants requires an IBM-compatible PC (Windows 95 or 98 Only) with at least a 75 MHz Pentium microprocessor (100MHz Pentium recommended,) at least 16 MB of RAM (32 MB recommended,) a CD-ROM drive, and a VGA color monitor set for 16 bit color or 24 bit color. Installation requires at least 9 MB of free space on the hard drive.

Search By

Scientific Name. Select the genus of the plant you wish to find in the genus list, then select the species or cultivar from the species/cultivar list.

Common Name. Select the common name of the plant you wish to find in the common names list, then select the scientific name of the plant from the scientific names list.

Plant Characteristics Specify the characteristics for the kind of plant you wish to identify using the buttons and drop-down lists in the search characteristics area. Then click the search button at the bottom of the search characteristics area or click Search on the Menu Bar. A list of scientific names will appear in the plant match list where you can make your selection.

Using Identification Keys. know the genus of your plant but not the species? Select the genus of the plant you wish to find in the genus list, then answer the questions that appear in the identification key region. When you plant has been identified, its scientific name will appear in the key identification field.

Use the Armitage Photo-Library with the Interactive Guide

Allan M. Armitage’s Photo-Library of Herbaceous Plants on CD-ROM is a set of four CD’s containing more than 7,000 digitized images of plants produced from Armitage’s extensive slide collection. If you own the Armitage Photo-Library, you can augment the more than 1,200 slides on the Interactive Manual CD-ROM by using the Photo-Library. To use the Photo-Library with the Interactive Manual, simply place any of the four Photo-Library CD-ROM diskettes in your CD-ROM drive before you start the Interactive Manual. Or, if you decide to switch to the Photo-Library after you have started the Interactive Manual, click Using Photolibrary in the File Menu. A check mark beside Using Photolibrary in the File Menu indicates that the Photo-Library is in use. The Interactive Manual will prompt you when you need to insert a different Photo-Library CD-ROM diskette in your drive.

Many of the plants shown include more than one image; for example, the habit of a particular plant may be shown as well as a close-up of the flower. Often a number of images showing the plant in a garden setting are included.
