Scientific Name:

The Scientific Name, also called the Latin name, universally refers to a specific plant.

Cultivar:

The cultivar refers to a horticultural variety that originated and persists because of cultivation.

Common Name:

The common name is the non-scientific name for a plant. Many common names can exist for a plant and is not univerally understood. For example, the common name for plants in the genus Cornus is dogwood.

Hardiness Zone:

The hardiness zone is designed to help gardeners predict whether a particular plant will be successful in a particular area. The United States and southern Canada are divided into 11 zones based on a 10 degree F difference in average annual minimum temperature. The hardiness zone system is based on the assumption that survival of landscape plants over winter is the most critical selection criterion in the plant’s adaptation to the environment. Annual and Biennials	Annuals germinate, flower, set seed and die in a single growning season. Biennials germinate and grow the first year, and flower and die the second year.
Aquatic Plants	Plants that grow in water.
Bromeliads	Tropical epiphytic or terrestrial plants that produce a showy bloom.
Cacti and other succulents	Mostly arid, desert-like plants that require little maintenance. Indoor or outdoor plants, depending on zone.
Carnivorous plants	Plants that trap and consume insects.
Climbers	Plants that grow upright, usually with the help of an arbor, trellis or the like.
Edibles	Plants that can be used for culinary purposes.

Ground covers	Plants used for the purpose of covering the ground.
Herbs	Plants that are grown for culinary, medicinal or therapeutic purposes.

Landscapes	Created outdoor scenes.
Orchids	Plants that are grown for their exotic flowers, generally tropical.
Ornamental grass and bamboo	Generally low maintenance clump-forming perennials typically used as accents in the landscape or border.
Palms and cycads	Prehistoric tropical plants generally grown for their foliage.
Perennials	Hardy ornamental plants that persists for several years or more. Grows each spring and dies back each fall.
Shrubs	Multi-stemmed woody plants grown for aesthetic or functional purposes.
Trees	Upright, generally single-stemmed large woody plant.
Turf grasses	Clipped foliage that forms a dense carpet used for lawns and landscape.
Vegetables	Plants that are grown for culinary purposes.

Plant Database Search Tips

We’ve worked hard to make this program as efficient and logical as possible. Please review the following tips to yield the best results. You can perform searches in two main ways.

If you know the name of a plant and want information, fill in the plant name fields as best as you can. If you know the genus and species you will get to the plant quicker. You may then have a choice of selections, varieties, and cultivars to choose from. If you already know the cultivar, include that in your initial search query. If you only know the common name, you can search that way, too. Keep in mind that common names vary from region to region and the common name you use for a plant may not be linked to the plant you are looking for or may not even be included in this database.
If you don’t have a specific plant in mind, but you do have some specific traits in mind, you can fill out the first tier of search requirements which are: size, color, bloom season, and hardiness zone. These are the primary criteria people use when searching for a plant. If you have more specific requirements, you can use the advanced search feature. This feature can be accessed at any time by clicking on the advanced search link.

The American Horticultural Society (AHS), founded in 1922, is an educational, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that recognizes and promotes excellence in American horticulture. Alabama Landscape & Nursery Association

Established in 1951, the Alabama Nurserymen’s Association is a professional association for those involved in and allied to the ornamental horticulture industry. The ANA is a non-profit trade association whose business is conducted by an elected Board of Directors. The ANA promotes the Alabama ornamental horticulture industry through its Annual Gulf States Horticulture Expo, Greenhouse and Nursery Seminars, and by its link with organizations in Alabama and throughout the nation. The ANA strives to provide the information and support to make your business more efficient and profitable.

Associated Landscape Contractors of America

The Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) is a trade association which promotes business management skills and the profitability of its members’ businesses. ALCA recognizes that the professional landscape contracting business is continually evolving and extremely competitive. ALCA provides its members with a good business foundation to help them evaluate, plan and better manage their businesses. Member firms have direct access to marketing tools, industry specific business publications and business experts who can assist companies in becoming more profitable.

ALCA members are a unique blend of landscape maintenance, installation, design/build contractors and interior landscape firms. Founded in 1963, ALCA develops and maintains active programs for its 2,000 member firms in the areas of business management, government affairs, public relations, technical assistance, safety and insurance, education, and inter-industry relations with other facets of the green industry.

California Association of Nurserymen

The California Association of Nurserymen is a professional organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the nursery industry for its members and the public it serves.

In 1969, C.A.N. established the California Certified Nursery Professionals™ (CCN. Pro™ ) program, the first accreditation program for nursery personnel in the United States. There are more than 3,400 California Certified Nursery Professionals , including approximately 350 who have earned advanced status by testing for proficiency in insects, diseases and weeds, irrigation and turf management.

California dominates the nation’s lawn and garden industry ringing up $8.4 billion in retail sales during 1999, approximately 21% of national sales. The State’s wholesale production is 26% of national sales. It is the fourth largest crop in California with $2.7 billion farmgate value in 1999.

Since 1952, C.A.N. has made annual research and scholarship grants to foster career development and work on problems of concern to the industry. In 1969, the California Association of Nurserymen Endowment for Research and Scholarship (CANERS) (501(c)-3) was created to provide sustaining funds for scholarships and grants. In 1999, CANERS awarded $275,450 to students and researchers. The endowment stands at $2.5 million.

New York Nursery & Landscape Association

NYSNLA is one of the state’s leading trade associations and the only organization serving the interests of nursery growers, garden center operators and landscapers and those doing business with the Green Industry throughout New York. Comprised of nearly 1000 companies, NYSNLA and its affiliated regional associations make available a wide variety of cost saving services, promotional materials, educational information, legislative and regulatory information, trade shows and the opportunity for networking in all geographic areas of the state.

Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association

The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association (ONLA) is a non-profit association, incorporated in the State of Ohio, representing the interests of the state’s nursery, garden center, and landscape industry. Membership is comprised of nursery stock growers, landscape contractors and maintenance firms, garden centers, arborists and allied suppliers.
