Allan M. Armitage’s Interactive Guide to Herbaceous Perennial Plants includes descriptions of over 4,000 plant species and cultivars plus more than 1,200 high-quality photographs of ornamental plants. More than 1000 printed pages of text discusses the history and uses of the plants and provides useful information on experiences with plants in different parts of North America. A powerful search engine allows you to find the perfect plant for your garden requirements, and an identification key helps pin down the differences between different species within a genus. Help files include a glossary, a hardiness zone map, diagrams to clarify terms used to identify plant shapes, Armitage’s reflections on gardening, and information about the author. Used in conjunction with Allan M. Armitage’s Photo-Library of Herbaceous Plants on CD-ROM, also available from PlantAmerica, the number of high-quality plant photographs is extended to over 7,000.
System Requirements
Allan M. Armitage’s Interactive Guide of Herbaceous Perennial Plants requires an IBM-compatible PC (Windows 95 or 98 Only) with at least a 75 MHz Pentium microprocessor (100MHz Pentium recommended,) at least 16 MB of RAM (32 MB recommended,) a CD-ROM drive, and a VGA color monitor set for 16 bit color or 24 bit color. Installation requires at least 9 MB of free space on the hard drive.
Program Features
Search By
Scientific Name. Select the genus of the plant you wish to find in the genus list, then select the species or cultivar from the species/cultivar list.
Common Name. Select the common name of the plant you wish to find in the common names list, then select the scientific name of the plant from the scientific names list.
Plant Characteristics Specify the characteristics for the kind of plant you wish to identify using the buttons and drop-down lists in the search characteristics area. Then click the search button at the bottom of the search characteristics area or click Search on the Menu Bar. A list of scientific names will appear in the plant match list where you can make your selection.
Using Identification Keys. know the genus of your plant but not the species? Select the genus of the plant you wish to find in the genus list, then answer the questions that appear in the identification key region. When you plant has been identified, its scientific name will appear in the key identification field.
Use the Armitage Photo-Library with the Interactive Guide
Allan M. Armitage’s Photo-Library of Herbaceous Plants on CD-ROM is a set of four CD’s containing more than 7,000 digitized images of plants produced from Armitage’s extensive slide collection. If you own the Armitage Photo-Library, you can augment the more than 1,200 slides on the Interactive Manual CD-ROM by using the Photo-Library. To use the Photo-Library with the Interactive Manual, simply place any of the four Photo-Library CD-ROM diskettes in your CD-ROM drive before you start the Interactive Manual. Or, if you decide to switch to the Photo-Library after you have started the Interactive Manual, click Using Photolibrary in the File Menu. A check mark beside Using Photolibrary in the File Menu indicates that the Photo-Library is in use. The Interactive Manual will prompt you when you need to insert a different Photo-Library CD-ROM diskette in your drive.
