What you need:
First, run a string line. You will use the string line as a reference point while building the wall. Dig a trench behind the line that is 4-6″ deep and as wide as your largest stone. |

Start placing stones along the string line. Use the largest stones available for the first row.

Once you have the first row in place, start adding medium and small stones to the wall. You may need to use a rubber mallet to secure the stones in place.

Backfill soil against the stones in stages, compacting as you go. The soil line should be level with the top of the wall when you are finished.

The finished wall can be used as a raised flowerbed, to terrace your lawn, or simply as a retaining wall. Try interplanting different groundcover plants into the spaces in the wall. After they fill out, they will create a natural, rustic effect.
