Firma C. Esveld of Boskoop, Holland, is the van Gelderen family nursery, one of the world’s great resources for plant connoisseurs. It includes an Aceretum with about 670 different maples and holds the Dutch national collection of _ Acer_. D. M. van Gelderen was the principal author of our _Maples of the World_ (as well as of _Conifers: The Illustrated Encyclopedia,_ that peerless photographic resource); now, in partnership with his son Cor, he has produced this photo gallery of the best maples for garden use. It is a complement both to his earlier book and to J. D. Vertrees’s _Japanese Maples,_ since more than a third of the book is devoted to _Acer palmatum,_ including many new and unusual cultivars. More than 80 other species are illustrated with their cultivars and hybrids. The photographs, taken in locations in seven countries, demonstrate the wonderful diversity of form, color, and size that make maples so useful in gardens of every kind.
