PlantAmerica – The Garden Center Network

Ever know the exact plant you’re looking for but not know where to purchase it? Regardless of the sector of the industry in which you work, you are no doubt aware of plant locator services. Here is a run-down on what you can expect.

With the boom that’s being taking place in our industry and with some of the devastating weather we’ve had over the past few years, it’s become less and less safe to count on getting the plants you want. Even long standing relationships between grower and buyer are becoming strained as some plants are in a high-demand/low-supply situation. There’s not much to be done about the facts. There is a set amount of need for a given plant and there only so many of those plants available.

If you’ve bumped into this problem of counting on an order of plants from one of your regular vendors only to be told “sorry, can’t fill the order” then you’ve no doubt turned to new sources. Clearly, the most efficient way to go about this is via one of many plant locator services available on the Internet. There are a lot of different such sites out there (and we’ve provided a list and links at the end of this article). That’s the good news.

The bad news is that through exploring these sites and having used and tested some (but not all of them) we’ve discovered there is a wide range of performance and overall satisfaction. Things to watch out for – our come out and ask the company this yourself – is how often the site information is updated. In one case we saw plants listed as being available. Signed up went through the time and hassle of registering and placing the order then two days later got word that they were out of the plants. We were only testing, but if you really needed them by a certain time that two-day lag could be problematic.

Another caveat to this extremely useful method of locating plants is the potential cost. Some of these services are completely free. Some have a flat membership fee. And some you pay a premium according to what you order. Be sure to check out all costs from start to finish of signing on and placing and receiving an order.

Below you will find a series of listings and links to 22 different plant locator services. PlantAmerica is no endorsing any of this services and has not investigated or tested each one. Each individual will need to determine for themselves if this is a service that meets your needs and gives you the service and performance you desire. We view this as a service of compiling a list you can have in one place. This list will always be in our feature article archives if you want to refer back to it. And if you know of a service that is left off of this list, please e-mail us at [email protected] and let us know and we’ll add it to the list.
